Due to a catastrophic storm, the Ares III mission must be stopped on Mars. Five astronauts can save themselves, only the botanist Mark Watney is injured and supposedly remains dead.
When his colleagues are already on their way back to Earth, Watney peels himself from a sand dune, badly injured. The scientist, who has not fallen on his lips, soberly and often sarcastically outwits his situation. A rescue mission would take four years, but its supplies last just three months. But that would also require NASA to know about Watney’s survival. But the storm has also destroyed the communication channels.
